How to support small businesses this season (and a few reasons why you should!)

It’s been a hard year for lots of our fellow small business owners. It seems like every day we pop open Instagram to see another Brooklyn business announcing a last day on the horizon, or begging for support. Small businesses shape our economy, culture and community. It’s so important to support them for many reasons, and luckily this time of year, there’s plenty of opportunity to do it!

Right now, in New York City, the streets are full of action. Holiday markets are springing up everywhere you look, and it’s always thrilling for us to see the range of small businesses, artists, artisans and entrepreneurs getting out there to meet prospective customers face-to-face. Every small business represents someone’s hard work, vision, and ambition and willingness to take a BIG risk. Supporting small businesses helps people (like us!) live the lives they want to, and encourages others to take the leap themselves.

To offer support and give back to our small biz community, we’re hosting a free branding and web design Q+A on Monday, December 16.

Here are a few reasons why you should support local small businesses:

1. Boosts Local Economy

  • Job Creation: Small businesses are major employers and provide jobs to local residents.

  • Economic Circulation: Money spent at local businesses tends to stay within the community, fostering a cycle of economic growth.

2. Fosters Innovation and Diversity

  • Small businesses often bring unique products, services, and ideas to the market that reflect local culture and needs.

  • They can be more adaptable and innovative compared to larger corporations, which often standardize their offerings.

3. Strengthens Community Bonds

  • Local businesses contribute to the identity and character of a neighborhood or town.

  • They create spaces for community members to connect, socialize, and support each other.

4. Promotes Sustainability

  • Many small businesses source locally, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation.

  • They often have smaller-scale operations that can be more environmentally friendly than large chains.

5. Encourages Personalized Service

  • Small business owners are more likely to know their customers and tailor their offerings accordingly.

  • This personal connection often leads to better customer service and a more satisfying shopping experience.

6. Creates Economic Resilience

  • A community with thriving small businesses is less dependent on large corporations, making it more resilient to economic downturns or disruptions.

Here are five easy ways you can support small businesses this holiday season:

1. Shop small in person and online

  • Shop local stores, purchase directly from small business websites and visit holiday markets, pop-ups and community events featuring small businesses.

2. Don’t forget service-based businesses

  • Support service-based businesses by booking sessions or buying gift cards or subscriptions for friends and family.

3. Eat and drink local.

  • Choose local food and drinks. Visit neighborhood bars, bakeries, restaurants and breweries. Use local catering services for your holiday party or send specialty food items as gifts.

4. Buy from artists.

  • Consider hand made items from artists and artisans over mass-produced gifts. They’ll be more unique and memorable!

5. Spread the word!

  • Share social media posts, leave positive Google or Yelp! reviews for businesses you love. Remember to tell your friends and family too. Word-of-mouth works!

In essence, small businesses are the backbone of both local and national economies, and they enrich the social and cultural landscape of our lives. Supporting them ensures their longevity and the well-being of the communities they serve.
